I went to Dae-hak Road with my friend today to see a comic play, Romeo and Juliet.
I've never seen a play before because I like watching movies, but my friend recommended that this one is great and popular.
It indeed was. The people were not famous, but it was really fun. First of all, it was comic, and there were four Romeos and four Juliets and we voted which Romeo and Juliet's acting we wanted to see. So the eight actors and actresses had 16 scenarios all planned and prepared!
It was a full two-hour play, and I do not regret coming here.
It was a great play. I really want to come to Dae-hak Road again.

English Immersion Program values

We think that the immersion program has more things positive than negative.
Because Korea don't have enough resources like oil, we need human resources in preparing for this globalized world. As we can see from the examples of India and Israel where they learn both their language and English together, these countries show outstanding achievements like Nobel Prizes. We need to be competent in communicating in English about a particular subject like physics or mathematics. Using English like this is advantageous in studying abroad later in the future. We do not think Immersion Program is good for kids in young age. We think in maybe middle or high school students who are already proficient in Korean skills. Also, first of all, the teachers should be good at English themselves because they should be able to teach their subject in English. If these are satisfied, then we think using English in other subjects is a good step toward a globalized society. When learn a language, it is better to not just sit in the classroom and learn, but to actually use it in other things. So this immersion program can help improve the students' English very fast and effectively.

[데일리경제]노무현 전대통령이 23일 오전 9시30분경 서거했다.

경찰에 따르면, 노전대통령은 경호원 1명을 동행한채 이날 새벽 봉화마을 뒷산에 올라 일명'부엉이 바위'에서 투신자살한 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다.

노전대통령이 투신하자 경호원이 자동차로 인근병원인 세영병원으로 이송했고, 재차 양산부산병원으로 8시10여분경 옮겨졌으나 9시30분경 사망한 것으로 알려졌다.

한때 자살설과 실족설이 돌았으나, 결국 자살로 모아지고 있다.

문재인 전청와대 비서실장과 김경수 비서관에 따르면 노전대통령이 투신전 남긴 유서가 발견되었다.

유서에는" 삶과 죽음이 하나가 아니겠나"라는 자조섞인 글과, "그동안 힘들었다, 지인들에게 미안하다, 원망하지 마라, 화장하라, 마을주변에 작은 비석하나 세워라'등의 짧은 글이 담겨있는 것으로 전해졌다.

Grey's anatomy

I'm so into watching Grey's Anatomy these days.
I used to watch Gregory House before watching Grey's Anatomy.
The common thing between these two soap operas is that they are both American medical soap operas.
I love medical soap operas, they are challenging.
Every day of their lives is challenging, I can't imagine working that much hours everyday.
They give the patients hope, but sometimes they give them despair.
How hard would it be to tell the patients that they are about to die tomorrow.
But at the same time, telling the patients that they are going to survive the cancer that they've been suffering for months.
That's why I like medical soap operas. They are challenging.
They save lives.

how to memorize vocabulary

1. 매일 단어 개수를 정해 외운다.
2. 하루도 빠짐없이 꾸준히 외운다.
3. 짧게 자주 본다. 오래 보며 한번에 외우는 것보다는 자주 보면서 친해지는 게 필요하다.
4. 예문을 함께 외운다. 예문으로 외우면 단어의 쓰임과 문장구조를 알 수 있고 기억하기 훨씬 쉬워진다.
5. 자투리 시간을 활용한다. 절대 책상 앞에 앉아서 학습카드를 외우지 않도록 한다. 등하교 및 출퇴근 시간, 쉬는 시간, 화장실, 잠자리 들기 전후 등 하루 중 남는 시간을 이용해 단어를 외운다.
6. 친구들과 함께 외워본다. 친구들과 함께 학습카드를 갖고 뜻을 알아맞추는 스피드 게임이나 동의어를 맞추는 게임을 해본다.
7. Mp3 파일을 들으며 큰 소리로 읽어본다. 다운로드받은 Mp3 파일을 들으며, 정확한 발음을 따라서 읽어보고 문장도 쉐도잉하면서 읽으면 훨씬 더 잘 외워지고 기억하기도 쉬워진다.

영어교육 확 바꾸자 - 교육과정을 바꾸자

서울 상원중 3학년 영어시간에 캐나다 출신 원어민교사 파트리샤 파워가 학생들과 영어수업을 진행하고 있다. 최승식 기자
지난달 21일 오전 서울 상원중 3학년 1반 영어시간. "When is the good time to start dating?"(데이트는 언제 시작하는 게 좋을까요?)캐나다 출신 원어민 교사 파트리샤 파워의 질문이다. 한 여학생이 대답했다. "I'm a middle school student. I have a boy friend, but my parents don't want it."(난 중학생이에요. 남자 친구가 있지만 부모님은 그걸 바라지 않아요.)그러자 한쪽에서 다른 남학생이 큰 소리로 외친다. "Right now!"(지금 당장)교실은 한바탕 웃음바다로 변했다. 한국인 교사와 원어민 교사의 협력수업(Co-Teaching) 시간이다. 교실에선 영어로만 말해야 한다. 홍나영(15)양은 "영어에 대한 두려움이 줄었고, 원어민 선생님과 대화를 하고 싶어 듣기.말하기 공부를 열심히 한다"고 말했다. 한국에서도 영어교육은 달라지고 있다. 그러나 아직도 많은 학생은 영어공부를 사교육에 의존하고 있다. 학교가 아직도 문법.독해 중심에서 벗어나지 못하고 있기 때문이다. 영어교육의 경쟁력을 높이려면 교육과정부터 뜯어고쳐야 한다는 목소리가 여전한 것도 이런 이유에서다.
◆ 영어만 쓰는 수업 필요해=지난달 21일 오후 서울 불암중 2학년 1반 영어 심화수업 시간. 홍성현(여) 교사의 수업주제는 '요리'다. 한 시간 내내 한국말은 들리지 않는다. 영어로 음식을 만드는 방법을 설명한 뒤 어떤 음식인지 맞히는 게임도 진행됐다. 한정호(14)양은 "점점 알아듣는 게 늘면서 수업에 재미를 느낀다"고 말했다. 교육부도 영어로 하는 수업을 권장한다. 그러나 서울의 경우 영어시간에 영어로 수업을 하는 초.중.고 교사는 6.1%뿐이다. 주당 한 시간 이상을 영어로 수업하는 교사는 10.5%다. 서울대 이병민 교수는 "언어 습득에는 질보다 양이 중요하다"면서 "영어 수업만이라도 영어로 진행해 학생들이 영어에 노출되는 기회를 확대해야 한다"고 말했다. 영어 외 다른 과목도 영어로 수업하는 '영어몰입교육'을 단계적으로 도입해야 한다는 지적도 나온다. 경인교대 이재희 교수는 "몰입교육은 이상적인 영어교육이지만 교사들의 영어 능력이 전제돼야 한다"며 "지금부터라도 이런 수업을 담당할 수 있는 교사 양성과 연수를 위한 중장기적인 계획을 수립해 실천해 나가야 한다"고 말했다.
◆ 영어 수업 시간 늘려야=중앙대 민병철 교수는 '시간의 중요성'을 강조한다. 귀가 트이려면 최소한 4000시간이 필요하다고 한다. 하지만 한국 중.고교 학생들이 6년 동안 배우는 영어 수업 시간은 모두 합쳐 706시간이다. 초등학생은 3학년부터 6학년까지 4년간 136시간 정도다. 전문가들은 "듣기.말하기 중심으로 적어도 30% 이상 영어 수업시간을 늘려야 한다"고 말했다. 상원중 원어민 교사 파트리샤는 "주당 한 시간의 원어민 영어 수업으론 한계가 있다"며 "최소한 지금보다 두 배는 돼야 한다"고 말했다.
◆ 교과서부터 바꾸자=현재의 영어교과서는 듣기.말하기.읽기.쓰기 비중이 엇비슷하다. 하지만 동덕여대 김인석 교수는 "영어에서 가장 중요한 것은 우선 원어민의 말을 알아듣는 것"이라면서 "영어 교과서에서 듣기 비중을 70%로까지 늘려야 한다"고 말했다. 중앙대 민 교수도 "대화 위주의 영어교육이 핵심이며 그러려면 교과서부터 바꿔야 한다"고 말했다. 학생들의 다양한 영어 실력차를 감안한 수준별 영어교육도 강조된다. 한양대 김임득 교수는 "학생들 간 영어실력 차이가 커 우수 학생은 동기부여가 안 되고 못하는 학생은 제대로 따라가지 못하는 등 문제가 많다"며 "임시방편적인 수준별 학습자료가 아니라 영어 교과서 자체를 수준별로 만들어 체계적인 영어교육이 이뤄지도록 해야 한다"고 말했다.과학 시간에도 영어로 묻고 대답 스웨덴 국민 90%가 '영어 술술'유럽은 어떻게 가르치나지난달 16일 스웨덴 스톡홀름의 명문고교인 엔실다 유무나시에트의 고2 교실. 이날의 주제는 '문학이 자연과학과 만나다'. 일종의 역할극이다. 중세기사 복장을 한 레오(17)는 "중세 의료 수준은 이슬람 세계가 앞섰다"고 말했다. 달걀을 들고나와 콜럼버스 선장 얘기를 하는 학생도 있다. 역할극이 끝나자 키키 에스룬트 교사가 노르만계 영웅 베어울프의 활약을 그린 고영시(古英詩) '베어울프'를 나눠줬다. "영어 단어 중 스웨덴어에서 나온 게 뭐냐"고 물었다. 학생들은 'knife' 'window' 'mother' 'father' 등의 단어를 쏟아냈다. 에스룬트 교사는 LA를 배경으로 한 아카데미 수상작 '크래시'를 언급했다. "실제 LA가 그런 모습일까" "인종적 편견이 특정 인종의 문제일까" "가장 감명받은 인물은 누구니"라는 게 교사의 질문이다. 수업은 모두 영어로 진행됐다. 하지만 영어수업 시간이 아니라 자연과학 수업 시간이었다. 유럽 국가의 국민은 대부분 영어를 잘한다. 스웨덴은 그중에서도 대표적인 나라다. 국민 열 명 중 아홉 명꼴로 영어 구사 능력이 있다. 2001년만 해도 영어가 가능한 비율은 열 명 중 일곱 명꼴이었다. 불과 5년도 안 된 사이에 20% 이상 늘어난 것이다. 스웨덴은 세계화가 시작되자 곧바로 영어교육 개혁에 착수했다. 그동안은 초등학교 3학년 때부터 영어교육을 시작했는데 최근에는 1학년 때부터 영어를 가르치는 학교가 늘고 있다. 스웨덴 교육개혁청 에바 엥그델 교육개발과장은 "과거엔 문법을 강조했었다"고 말했다. 한국과 마찬가지였던 셈이다. 그는 "요즘엔 일상 생활에서 마주치는 상황을 많이 다뤄 영어가 쓸모 있는 언어란 걸 아이들에게 보여주고 있다"면서 "앞으론 수업시간에 영어만 사용토록 하는 '몰입 교육'을 확대할 방침"이라고 말했다. 핀란드도 비슷한 분위기다. 헬싱키의 명문 사립인 쿨로사리 중등학교는 1991년부터 일부 교과목을 대상으로 영어 몰입교육을 실시했다 이제는 우수반 학생들에겐 전 과목을 영어로 가르친다. 교사도 거의 모두 원어민들이다.카일릴키 빌쿠나 교장은 "과학이나 수학 같은 일반 교과를 영어로 가르치려면 영어를 잘하는 정도의 핀란드 선생님으로는 불가능하다"면서 "그래서 아예 원어민 교사들을 초빙해 과목을 맡기고 있다"고 말했다. 그는 "학생이나 교사 모두 영어로 말하길 즐겨 핀란드에 온 지 5년이 넘은 영어권 교사 중엔 아직도 핀란드어 한마디도 못하는 이가 있다"고 소개했다. 실제 영어교육 개혁은 전 유럽 차원에서 진행되고 있기도 하다. 유럽평의회는 2001년 말 유럽어 관련 '유럽 공통 기반(Common European Framework)'을 개발, 교육과정에 채용하도록 권고했다.

▶53개 의사소통 상황도 정리했다. 독일.덴마크.핀란드 등에서 채택했다. 핀란드에선 고교를 마칠 때 영어수준이 중상인 B2가 돼야 한다고 규정했다. 영국문화원에서 올 초 나온 보고서(English Next)는 "여러 언어가 사용될 수 있는 토양을 마련하기 위한 프로젝트"라며 "그러나 실제론 영어가 점차 일상어로 자리 잡아가고 학교수업시간표에서도 특별한 위치를 점하기 시작했다"고 평가했다. 점차 초등학교 저학년부터 영어교육을 하고 더 많은 영어몰입교육이 이뤄지고 있다는 것이다.

TOEIC

I have TOEIC exam on May 31st.
It's my first time taking TOEIC so I'm nervous.
Today is May 13th, but I did not study at all.
I'm nervous.

teaching English through English

I think "teaching English Through English" is necessary in public school English class. Before, English teachers in Korea did not pay attention to teaching the speaking part in English classes, but just paid attention on reading comprehension and what are going to appear on the exams. Today, however, many parents want their children to be both excellent in reading and writing and be fluent in speaking and listening. We live in a globalized world, we meet foreigners practically everyday especially at colleges, and we have more chance in communicating with them. In order to communicate with the foreigners, Koreans should not be afraid in talking with them casually. Most Koreans think speaking English is a hard task, but if we practice it everyday and get used to it, speaking would not be such a hard problem anymore. Therefore, "teaching English Through English" in public school English class is necessary. We learn our mother tongue first by listening, listening opens our mouth to speaking. If the teachers in public schools are fluent in English themselves, children would have much easier way in accessing a globalized world.
However, it is not necessary that all teachers in public school English class have to be native speakers of English. Of course, it would be beneficial to the students if the teachers are native speakers especially when it comes to pronunciation, and also because the native speakers have no problem speaking English thus no stress. But, today since the Teacher's Examination includes speaking English and in college, the professors view speaking as an important part of English Education, the graduate students of English Education are mostly fluent in speaking themselves and have no problem teaching English through English. It is just that it would be easier for the native speakers to prepare classes. Korean English teachers have more benefits in that they understand the students better since they used to be one of them sitting there, and that they can thus communicate better with the students.
I want to be a English teacher myself, so I try to think more about English education these days and the pros and the cons. I think in Korean English classes, students should be more involved in the classes, if the teacher speaks English only and let the students participate in activities, the students will get more interested in the language itself. People want to know more about something when they are interested in something. Letting students know that the college entrance exam is not the final goal of their life, but English has much more use later in life since it is becoming more like a huge globalized world today, and that it has potential, students will thrive to learn English. I think activities such as going outside to the playground or the park to write a poem in English about the nature, or writing English journal once a week, or having a discussion in English during classes will get away the stress students have about English and be interested in the class.

During mid-term exams, I was worrying about Linguistics and the History of the English Language so much that I did not pay that much attention to Understanding of the English Education because it seemed easier than the first two. I did so-so in the first two exams, but I had no idea that I would score that bad in Understanding of the English Education class.
I think I should study more from now.
I already payed for my TOEIC exam on May 31st but I did not study for that yet.
I must study more from now.
Today in Linguistics class, we learned about Phonology, but I could not understand a single word due to my lack of studying the night before.
I was planning on staying awake the whole night for the quiz in Linguistics today.
I stayed up until 3 a.m., but I did not study.
I was helping out someone I know who asked me to translate something,
but I had time to study but I did not.
I did not do well on the quiz.

My self-access learning blog.
I am glad that I have my own blog which I can design and use freely.
I think having this blog is a good opportunity to practice English skills.
I hope my English speaking, writing, and reading skills would improve by using this blog.

I am not good at designing, especially this blog seems somewhat complicated to design for me who is not so good at computers. So instead of making the blog a pretty environment for people to visit and say "wow~", I plan to make a full use at writing. I am going to try writing diaries once every now and then and also write journals and put up articles that I am interested in.

Purpose:
The purpose of developing my SALB is to design my own blog and write daily diaries and journals and put articles that I am interested in- including health, English Immersion Program, Mr.Roh's death, etc. My goal is to use this blog often and practice my English skills in various areas, and also research in English the topics I am interested in.

Planning (how to use it)
I am going to make this blog my own personal blog where I can write freely and visit whenever I want. I do not have to care so much about how others would judge when reading my journals because they are my personal thoughts. I can also overpraise myself, put things that I care, complain about homework. Also, I am going to put a special effort on vocabulary. I plan to memorize vocabulary but I do not seem to have much time, but I am going to try working on improving my vocabulary skills since it is the key to good writing and speaking. I think vocabulary and pronunciation are the basic of good English speaker, so I am going to pursue working on both.

6. Eat dairy daily-A piece of cheese or a cup of milk or yogurt can rev up your metabolism, a University of Tennessee study found. People who cut 500 calories a day from their diets while eating yogurt three times a day lost 13 pounds over 12 weeks, more weight and more body fat than a control group who only cut calories.

7. Have an apple before dinner-How did 346 people in small-town Washington State lose an average of 17 pounds each in 3 months? With regular exercise, balanced eating, and an apple with every meal. The typical apple has 5 grams of fiber, which makes you feel fuller.

MT

We went to MT from May 4th to 5th.
It was our first MT for just the freshmen.
We had nobody to bother telling us what our schedule was, and we had no one to fill ill at ease.
Almost everybody at my class went to the MT, and it was time to get to know more about each other.
It was so much fun, although we had trouble getting there, it was okay since it was our first MT.
I feel like I now know more about my classmates, what they like, what they don't like, etc.
I think we could be closer friends in the future.
I look forward to do more things together.

Cyworld

Most teenagers and college students in Korea enjoy expressing their life and feelings in cyworld, a popular blog website. Cyworld is pretty, we can buy the cyworld background color and we can add music, but we should buy the coin in order to make it pretty.
There is a comment board on the main site where people can write whatever they feel like about the person and a visitor's board where people can even post secret messages about the person.
I like the picture board where I can even modify pictures and post them, and if I like the picture posted on someone else's cyworld, I can copy them and put on mine.
Also, cyworld has lots of clubs where I can visit, and it's fun to visit them.
