English teacher's pronunciation
Before, students began to learn English as a subject from Freshmen in Middle school. However, this trend changed in 1988 when students began learning English from third grade in Elementary school.
As we gradually entered the global age, Koreans began to focus more on outside of Korea and in learning English.
Today, as the MB government stated clearly that he wants to follow the Western style of teaching method and especially in ENGLISH, Korean students were put into much more stress than before.
Not only students, but teachers are having hard times as well because students these days tend to really care their English teacher's pronounciation.
We cannot blame both sides.
Before, there was no need in practicing speaking because the teachers focused on exams and just the textbooks. However, today Korean parents want their children's speaking to be improved as well because the formal method did not work when meeting a foreigner.
There are many Koreans (especially in Seoul) who have studied abroad and lots of whom have learned from foreign teachers.
These days, students do not welcome English teachers who's English pronounciation is worse than whom they have learned before.
It is not wrong to believe that English teachers should be experts in English and that their English pronounciation skills should be just as well as foreigners.
These days, since the Exam to be an English teacher is so hard and includes speaking Exam, the English teachers today are such experts in English that there is no need for students to worry about their pronounciation.
The students should not just want foreign teachers just because of pronounciation because Korean teachers have other advantages.

what type of learner are you?
My test result shows that I have extravert, intuitive, feeling, and judgement in me.
I took MBTI test few years ago, and I was very intraverted, which was true since I did not like to join in groups to play but rather liked to be alone.
However, since I firmly decided to become a teacher, many people gave me suggestions on the virtues of a good teacher, one of being an extraverted person.
Many say there are few turning points in your life, one being a freshman in college where no one knows how you've been in the past.
I thought this would be a great time to change my personality and become more involved in a group and be socialized.
I tried to talk first to the other freshmen in Orientation where we knew no one in the group, I tried to participate in activities and be part of the group.
I truly think my personality had changed. I am now much more active and extraverted, and I feel involved in the freshmen class now.
I was worried that the MBTI test would show similar result from before, but I was glad when the result showed E(extraverted) instead of I (introverted).
Idealist Portrait of the Teacher (ENFJ)
Extraversion: I prefer to direct my energy to deal with people, thing,s situations, or "the outer world".
Intuition: I prefer to deal with ideas, look into the unknown, to generate new possibilities or to anticipate what is not obvious.
Feeling: I prefer to decide using values and or personal beliefs, on the basis of what you believe is important or what you or others care about.
Judging: I my life to be planned, stable and orpanized.
Teachers have a natural talent for leading students toward learning, and they are capable of calling forth each learner's potentials. They believe in their students, and the ability to fire the imagination can amount to a kind of genius which other types find hard to emulate.
Teachers consider people their highest priority, and they instinctively communicate personal concern and a willingness to become involved. Warmly outgoing, and the most expressive. Teachers are good with language, expecially when communicating in speech, face to face. Teachers will voice their passions with dramatic flourish, and can become charismatic public speakers (verbal ability).
Teachers like things settled and orpanized, and they are extraordinarily tolerant of others, are easy to get along with, and are usually popular. Teachers are highly sensitive to others, without a doubt, they know what is going on inside themselves, and they can read other people with uncanny accuracy. Teachers show a sincere interest in the joys and problems of their loved ones.
Mikhail Gorbachev, Oprah Winfrey, Pope John Paul II, Ralph Nader, John Wooden, and Margaret Mead are examples of Teacher Idealists.
hard, but fun
We took our first quiz in Linguistics.
It was open book, but I do not think I did well because I've been playing too much lately.
The professor gave us one week to prepare for the quiz, but I did not study because it was too hard and too much.
There were about 10 people who got full credits on the quiz.
Everyone said they did not study even little bit so I was quite surprised at how many students got full points.
The professor told us to read 2 pages of Linguistics everyday, then we will pass the exam and understand.
I told myself, I promised myself that I will follow his idea, but did not fulfill this dream for a week now.
I should really start studying now since many of my classmates are secretly studying at home.

A Myth in learning English
Fast improvement in a short period of time
For example, many hakwons have advertisements that says
"TOEIC 900 in 3 months"
and in the advertisements are students who have actually succeeded in scoring 900 in TOEIC, and they say how much they have improved in this hakwon.
However, these succeeded students are probably ones who have already skills and are better than most.
Also, students need motivation in learning a foreign language. Hakwons can help students to have interest in learning English, but if the students have no interest at all, then there is no help hakwon can do because hawons do not care if the students do not come to class (not strict like school).

Exhausted
There are too many activities that I'm so tired and exhausted right now.
It is good that I get to meet many new friends in college, but it is so tiring
that many of my friends have already gotten sick.
There are also many homework even though it is just the beginning of the school year,
which let me imagine how hard it would be in the future.
The professors are all nice and teach well, but the subjects are hard for me to understand.
However, it does not mean I am going to give up.
I will try my best to succeed in both human relationship and the school work.

Virtues of a Good Language Teacher
A good language teacher must respect the different language skills of each student.
Every one is different, especially when it comes to language.
Many Korean students have already gone abroad to study English, but some have not.
The English teachers in Korean schools must realize the vast differences in everyone's skills and respect every student.
Or else, some students will be bored by the easy course but some will have a difficult time in learning what some other students already know. The teacher should not use the cramming method of teaching but make the students do the work by themselves.
A good teacher must be respectable by the students in the future. Some of us have many teachers whom we will always remember and contact even after we graduate. However, some of us have no teachers that they respect or will remember in the future. A good teacher must be trustworthy, humble, just, and warm-hearted. The teacher should make the students feel comforted in his or her class.
A good language teacher must give interest to students about the language they are learning about. First of all, the teacher must like the language itself, and he or she should encourage the students to love the language also by doing fun projects or singing, etc.
A good language teacher should continue to study his or her major even after they become teachers. Language is easy to forget if we do not continue in the future. Language teachers should study more about that language often.
A good language teacher should be well-known about the foreign culture. Language is based on each country's culture, geology, and so on.

My idealistic teacher
I had three teachers who have influenced me in my life.
The second grade teacher in elementary school was tough, harsh, and difficult to deal with.
One time, my friends and I were in the playground and forgot to be on time for the next class.
When we went in late, the teacher was mad and told us to go straight to the kindergarten classroom which was next door, saying we are acting like small kids.
We waited outside the two rooms for about 15 minutes when the teacher called us.
She told us that she does not hate us, but simply want us to learn to be diligent and to act older.
And she hugged us.
I still contact her, because I want to be a teacher who are harsh and warm-hearted at the same time.
No one really liked my sixth grader teacher at first because she was harsh and gave us lots of homework. She taught us almost every subject, so she had all the time she needs with us. She gave us quizzes, tests, and projects often and we could not understand why we had to suffer this much. However I realized later how much English I have improved over the past year. I also learned to study by myself and also with groups.
I truly respect her, because I want to be a teacher who could truly teach the students to do the work by themselves.
The third teacher I want to introduce is my science teacher at high school. There was no one who did not like him for he was always smiling, nice, gentle, and had knowledge about almost every area. His courses were hard because I was not interested in science that much, but there are a few of my friends who decided to major in science due to this teacher's impact. He respected his students and encouraged us for what we have done.
The idealistic figure of teacher is someone who truly respects his students and give them all the knowledge he has.

Debate over 'death with dignity' intensifies
By Song Sang-ho
2009.03.06
The debate over terminally-ill patients' right to die has been reignited following the death of Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan last month.
Nearing his death, Kim, 86, asked medical staff to let him face natural death with dignity without a life-support machine to avoid a "meaningless extension of life."
The debate has gotten more intense with a recent court battle on whether to turn off life-support for a 76-year-old woman in a permanent vegetative state as requested by her family, who asserts their mother, when conscious, said she wished to die naturally.
The case is currently pending in the Supreme Court after district and appeals courts ordered removal of her respirator.
Ruling Grand National Party lawmaker Shin Sang-jin held a public hearing at the National Assembly on Wednesday over legislation governing legal procedures for "death with dignity."
Experts at the hearing concurred that the time is ripe for the country to seriously discuss legislation regarding death with dignity.
National Cancer Center director Yoon Young-ho cited figures in a survey that suggested a great portion of respondents approved of death with dignity.
In the survey of 1,006 adults, conducted in September last year, 87.5 percent of respondents said that a patient should be allowed to face natural death when it is imminent and medical treatment is futile.
Experts also drew a clear distinction between death with dignity and euthanasia.
"In the case of death with dignity, a patient can make their own decision to die naturally with dignity whereas euthanasia means a doctor, though the intention is good, assists in 'killing' the patient," said Shin Hyun-ho, a lawyer and member of the health and medical committee of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice.
Rep. Shin Sang-jin submitted a bill last month which stipulates detailed procedures for death with dignity and punitive measures for irregularities.
Under the bill, when a patient is unconscious, the patient's family can request that life extension treatment be halted after presenting evidence to prove that the patient, when conscious, expressed a wish to die with dignity.
When conscious, the patient can write a note to express their wish, which will then be scrutinized through close consultation with psychiatrists or a hospital's ethics committee.
Under the bill, if a family opposes the patient's decision to die, it can call for further deliberation to the hospital chief via the hospital's ethics committee.
The bill also stipulates that medical staff participating in the procedures are to be exempt from prosecution, and that a patient will not get any disadvantage in receiving insurance payments when an insurer labels their death a suicide.
The bill also has punitive provisions.
Those who assist a patient's suicide or stop treatment against a patient's will are to face jail terms of three years or more. Both those who impede the death with dignity and those who continue life-extension treatment against a patient's will are to face jail terms of up to three years or fines up to a maximum of 10 million won ($6,400).

a new day, a new start !
A new day, a new start!
I'm so excited to begin a new chapter of my life.
I'm happy to meet everyone in my class and all the new professors,
and I think we could all become good friends.
I was born in southern part of Korea but I spent most of my school years in Shenyang, China,
as my father was a missionary.
I wanted to become a teacher since I was young because I've met three great teachers until now
and I also like to be one who can influence other people's lives.
I came back to Korea last year to enter university in Korea,
and I'm so glad I got accepted to this university since it was one of my dream universities.
I'm excited to begin as a freshman,
and I'd like to learn more about this course because I think it could help me fulfill my dream.
Love ya ♥
